We had a lively conversation while studying the chess sets in the exhibition. Jean-Claude not only had a keen eye and historical knowledge for evaluating chess sets but also an enthusiasm for world events, a sharp intellect, and a refined sense of humor that went beyond his interests as a collector. As the convention ended we exchanged invitations to view each other's collections. Over the years, during the course of Jean-Claude's visits to the States and mine to Europe, we became good friends. I warmly recall the first time my wife, Risa, and I were graciously hosted by Monique and Jean - Claude at their lovely home in Saint Germain en Laye. Jean-Claude's modesty had not prepared me for such a remarkable collection of rare and beautiful chess sets. Simply put, the Cholet chess collection is one of the finest in the world. On behalf of his fellow collectors, it is an honor to write this tribute to Dr. Jean-Claude Cholet. The excellence that he achieved in his personal and professional life is reflected in the quality of his collection. He was a true gentleman-connoisseur. We, his close friends, will always remember Jean-Claude with great fondness and admiration. Doug Polumbaum.
