VIZAGAPATAM, SECOND QUARTER 19TH CENTURY
The box with a carved writhen scroll handle and foliate contra partie decoration overall, fitted with two velvet lined ebony trays
9½in. (24.2cm.) wide
Fitted with an ivory chess set, in the manner of George Merrifield, circa 1830, the kings each with a Maltese cross finial, the queen with a foliate finial, on turned baluster knopped bases
The king -- 3½in. (9cm.) high; the pawn -- 1¾in. (4.5cm.) high

This chess set pattern can be compared to an example attributed to Merrifield, circa 1830, and illustrated in Michael Mark, Chessmen Practical and Ornamental, exhibtion catalogue, Asprey, 1986, fig.8.
Signed sets, engraved with George Merrifield, of the same design are known. Merrifield worked between 1818 and 1851, in Great Turnstile, London's Inn Fields.
