Struck with a pewterer's hammer on the rim, the back of the rim and booge hammered, a strengthening bead to the outer rim on the underside, a raised boss

Lot Essay

Purchased Christies South Kensington, 1st March 2005 lot 292. It had been consigned anonymously, the provenance having been found near Middleham Castle, North Yorkshire in the 1960's.

There are believed to be only two other examples of this type of saucer known. One illustrated in J.Pewter Soc. Autumn 1985 p.68. 'An early saucer', by M. Kashden. Measuring 5 7/16ins it was sold in the Law sale, Phillips Chester, lot 111.
A second 5 3/8in. was found at Tong castle, see the Worshipful Company of Pewterers No.S125, p.24, also illustrated in J.Pewter Soc. Autumn 1978.
