Lot Essay

Purchased Sotheby's 25th April 1985, lot 68. It had been consigned to sale together with a candlestick from a vendor who had found both in a locked strongbox. The candlestick is lot 114 in this sale. A similar plate is illustrated in Pewter, A handbook of Selected Tudor and Stuart Pieces, page 16. Found at the Royal Exchange it is now in the Museum of London.
Compare with the Master salt lot 29. It is known that Pewterers made use of their moulds to make parts for more than one item.
