Lot Essay
This portrait type derives from Holbein's great wall-painting in the Privy Chamber of Whitehall Palace (finished in 1537). The mural was destroyed in the Whitehall Palace fire of 1698, but is known from two mid-17th Century copies by Leemput (Royal Collection and Petworth House). 'Long Gallery sets' of the Kings and Queens of England were popular in the 17th Century.
