Newburgh Priory near Coxwold, North Yorkshire, stands on the site of an Augustinian priory, founded in 1145. Little is known of the Priory from its founding until the dissolution of the Monastries by King Henry VIII in 1538, when it passed to the ownership of the de Bellasis family. It is reputed to be the burial place of Oliver Cromwell whose remains were said to have been brought to Newburgh Priory by his daughter Mary on her marriage to the 2nd Viscount. The Priory passed by descent to Sir George Wombwell, 3rd Bt. in the 19th Century, and remains in the family today.
