Lot Essay

Gilpin came to London in 1749 where he was a pupil of the marine and topographical painter Samuel Scott. Following a commission to paint horses by the Duke of Cumberland in 1758, he began to establish a reputation as one of the finest animal painters of his generation, outshone only by Stubbs.
