Lot Essay

The Lune Valley and the area around it, with the Forest of Bowland nearby, was particularly admired in the early 19th Century as it fulfilled Romantic notions of the picturesque. The present view may show Crook O Lune, Near Caton, where the River Lune meanders in a big curve through tree-lined banks. The view was painted by J.M.W. Turner, and described by Thomas Gray and William Wordsworth among others.
