Lot Essay

Miss Emma Laura Whitbread was the second daughter of Samuel Whitbread (1764-1815) of Southhill, Bedfordshire, and Lady Elizabeth Whitbread, daughter of the 1st Earl Grey. Samuel was of the brewing family, and a well known English Whig politician who supported the abolition of the slave trade and religious toleration, causes that he warmly espoused throughout his life. On 24 June, 1817, Emma Laura was married to Charles Shaw-Lefevre (1794-1888), created Viscount Eversley on 11 April, 1857, and for many years Speaker of the House of Commons. They had three sons, none living beyond the age of six, and three daughters. Lady Eversley died on 20 June, 1857.
