The rectangular breakfront brèche d'Alep later marble top with canted angles above three short drawers and two long drawers decorated sans traverse, with cube parquetry, the sides decorated conformingly, the canted angles with garlanded clasps, on slightly shaped angled legs terminating in foliate and paw-cast sabots, stamped 'P.H.MEVVESEN' and 'JME', inscribed in ink 'NO.1' and with remains of paper label inscribed 'Madame la Comtesse/Chandois de Briailles/La Cordelière/Chaource Aube'

Lot Essay

Pierre-Harry Mewesen, maître in 1766. Of Scandinavian origin, Mewesen worked in Paris, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine until the Revolution, focusing predominantly on Transition and Louis XVI pieces. Mewesen is well-known for his geometric and cube marquetry, as illustrated in the present lot. A closely-related commode was sold from the former Collection of Baron Hottinguer, Christie's, Paris, 2-3 December 2003, lot 73. A further related commode sold from the Schloss Herblingen Collection, Christie's, 14-18 September 1998, lot 406.
