It was photographed in situ at Mottisfont in The Whistler Room. Mottisfont has had a succession of owners throughout its long history and in 1938-9 Rex Whistler was employed by Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Russell, the then owners, to transform the room. The Russells, a great-grandson of the 6th Duke of Bedford, had bought the house in 1934 and it was eventually given to the National Trust by them in 1957. Mrs Russell continued to live there until 1972. THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN
