MID-18TH CENTURY
The twin triangular pedimented cornice above a recessed central section with a pair of glazed doors enclosing six adjustable shelves, flanked by projecting wings each with a single glazed door enclosing six adjustable shelves, the base section with fielded panelled doors enclosing shelves, on a reconstructed moulded plinth base, the reverse inscribed in chalk 'Mr Chambers 362' and with label inscribed 'Furniture Carriers Risk N. Wade Esq. ...', with depository label printed 'A. E. CHAMBERS 55(?)', originally part of a run of fitted bookcases, with consequential minor alterations to the cornice and ends

Lot Essay

The tripartite bookcase's projecting wings are crowned by temple-pediments derived from a George II 'Roman' pattern in B. Langley's, City and Country Builder's and Workman's Treasury of Designs, 1740 (pl. 162).
