A pair of English wax over papier mache-headed dolls
with dark inset eyes, hair wigs and cloth bodies with kid arms, dressed as a man and a woman, he with Eton jacket, wasitcoat, shirt, buff corduroy trousers, socks and black boots, the woman in a mauve cotton frock printed with a seaweed design, cotton cape, shift, brown Holland laced bodice and matching petticoat, wool petticoat, socks, shoes and straw bonnet trimmed with pink and white silk ribbon, 1840 --24in. (61cm.) high (man with large piece of wax missing from forehead and damage to fingers, faded) (2)

Lot Essay

This lot and lot 312 were found in an attic when the vendors bought a house. Both lots appear not to be toys and could possibly have been two successive generations of shop window displays for a clothes outfitters.
