a small dipped wax over papier mache-headed taufling with sleeping blue eyes, two teeth, tightly curled blonde wig and clothes, wood and papier-mache body wearing original white ribbed cotton frock with braided decoration, original additional clothes and accessories included a lined and lidded basket, a white straw hat decorated with artificial flowers and ribbons, a pink and white party frock of muslin trimmed with lace and bows, pink and white matching jackets, bib and cap, two blue silk covered parasols with turned bone handles, an apron, brushes, toothbrush, soap, shoes, powder puff and a baby's folding hammock bassinet with original canopy, hangings and bedding of spotted muslin over blue quilted cotton, edged with blue silk bows and lace, in original box with label reading 'Bradley Barnard sole inventor, patentee and manufacturer of Barnard's Patent folding hammock bassinet, London' and gold medals from Vienna 1873 in both catagories V and VIII; and trade cards from Maison Simonne, one showing an early Steiner doll (2)
Provenance
The doll was bought for Emily Kitson, born 1866, the middle of five children born to James Kitson and his wife Emily Cliff. James Kitson was an extremely successful man, not only owning iron and steel works, but an investor in oil exploration on the Caspian sea, a Lord Mayor of Leeds, a Liberal MP and finally a peer, Baron Airedale of Gledhow. Emily never married inspite of being stunningly beautiful, charming and graceful. Herbert Gladstone, the Prime Ministers son was extremely fond of Emily and wrote her enchanting letters, she remained her father's companion and hostess until he died.
Her father wrote to her from Paris in 1876 'We are at a shop yesterday and saw such a pretty parasols for dolls and beautiful dolls dresses and bonnets, such pretty frocks and frills'.
