Lot Essay

The present composition is comparable to Jan Steen's pictures of the Fat and Meagre Kitchen (private collection and National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; see H.P. Chapman et.al., Jan Steen, Schilder en Verteller, 1996, nos. 2-3). Similar is the choice of subject matter, which derives from Flemish 16th century prints and the satirical Brueghelian character of the figures.
