The noted theoretician and teacher Johannes Itten studied painting at the Stuttgarter Academie between 1913-1916 before founding his own art school in Vienna. While teaching, he discovered the 'significance of automatism in the artistic process', and his instruction included studies of form and colour contrasts, and compositions with texture. Between 1919-1923 he was a central influence as a master at the Bauhaus, Weimar, devising the preliminary course that became a new concept for training artists. It was primarily through his influence that Georg Muche, Oskar Schlemmer, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky were called to the Bauhaus. His approach, however, was considered too mystical for the pragmatic director, Walter Gropius, and in 1923 he moved to Zurich to again establish his own art school.
