Lot Essay

Bandra was one of seven ships built for the British India Steam Navigation Company by Barclay Curle & Co. Ltd of Glasgow. Launched in March 1914, she had a deadweight tonnage of 4,300 tons, was 342.7 feet in length, could maintain a speed of 13 knots and was almost immediately pressed into War service as a troop carrier. Ultimately she was to serve in two wars without suffering mishap, however, she hit a mine on 4th June 1946. Successfully repaired, Bandra was sold to the Whang-poo Steamship Company of Hong Kong for £40,000 and was finally broken up in July the following year.
