The Dane painter Jean-Ferdinand Willumsen first discovered Brittany during the summer of 1890, where he joined his friend Meyer de Haan and first met Gauguin. Although the latter had a significant influence on him as far as technique was concerned - preparation of the colours, finishing of the canvases - Willumsen's own personal style, which he adapted very well to the Pont-Aven esthetic, recognizable by its naive and vivid touch typical of the Scandinavian art, is always in evidence.
