Lot Essay

The early versions of Star Trek made very little use of shuttlecraft or other landing vehicles. The main reason for this was cost: The Original Series could not possibly have afforded the visual effects to land a shuttle every week. That's why The Original Series used transporters a lot more than shuttlecraft. Star Trek: Enterprise, on the other hand, was set a century before The Original Series, so the producers wanted to use shuttles a lot, to show that the technology was not as advanced. Fortunately, budgets had improved, so the NX-01 could afford the upfront expense to build two full-sized shuttlepods, both with interior sets and cool seating.
