Original printed paper covers mounted on card (re-backed preserving the original spine, edges chipped, first two leaves torn in the margin and nearly detached). Provenance: Donald Davidson (1893-1968, author, and educator; inscription from Stieglitz in pencil on the endpaper dated 'Sept 22 1917').
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY TO THE AUTHOR DONALD DAVIDSON WITH A FULL PAGE INSCRIPTION BY STIEGLITZ DISCUSSING '291'. 'When in June, 1914, I asked the question "What is 291?" -- the human race thought itself at Peace -- I knew there was no Justice, therefore no Peace -- Revolution -- War -- Killing -- Legalized Butchery -- were knocking at the door -- so loud that but few heard! -- "What is 291"?' Stieglitz goes on recalling time spent with Donaldson, and contrasting the chaos described above with the serenity of Lake George. Stieglitz's 'Georgia O'Keefe and Donald Davidson' and 'Legs (Elizabeth and Donald Davidson)' are both in the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
