A fine George II silver Butterfield-type compass sundial,
J. Coggs Fecit; mid 18th Century
with three-scale concentric hour scale labelled Carlisle 8-12-4 Lat 55, London VIII-XII-IIII Lat 51 and 8-12-4 Lat 45, folding latitude arm with 38 - 57° scale and bird index pointer, and compass basin engraved with eight-point windrose, labelled for sixteen points of the compass and 25-0-25 scale and with blued-steel needle, the obverse with table of latitude for twenty cities, the compass basin's reverse engraved with a Viscount's coronet and cypher, engraved with stylised foliated decoration throughout, in fishskin-covered, plush-lined case
