Lot Essay

This unusal decorative choice of 'butterflies and flowers' delicately enamelled against a pastel lavender-blue ground appears to be unique. A related example of the same elegant shape enamelled with lotus scrolls against a ruby-red ground, and inscribed with a Qianlong date corresponding to 1744, is illustrated in Catalog of the Special Exhibition of K'ang-hsi, Yung-cheng and Ch'ien-lung Porcelain Ware from the Ch'ing Dynasty in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1986, no. 141; where it is illustrated together with a slightly larger underglaze-blue candlestick.
