Lot Essay

While fine chains linking handles and covers on jade vases of the late Qing dynasty became a technique by which to display the carver's virtuosity, it is rare to find the chain more subtly placed on the interior of the vase. It is perhaps more reminiscent of mid-Qing wood and ivory carvings with chains linikng the vase and cover such as the boxwood double gourd vase in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, The Complete Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2001, pp. 91-92 pl. 84
