These French-fashioned 'cheval screens', with arched 'claws', relate to a pattern in the Grecian or antique manner in George Smith's, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808 (pl.110). They are also designed to harmonise with Scone's triumphal-arched chimneypieces designed by the architect William Atkinson (d.1839); and were possibly inspired by the French-fashioned and ormolu-enriched screen included in this sale (lot 349).
