A FINE LARGE POLYCHROME-LACQUER CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

Finely and deeply carved through thick lacquer of red, yellow and green tones, with Shoulao holding a scroll, seated under a pine within a large character Chun, 'Spring', flanked by five-clawed dragons amidst clouds above a bowl of auspicious emblems, surrounded by a band of classic-scroll and panels of scholars and attendants in landscapes divided by the Eight Precious Buddhist Tearsures, Babao, on the rounded sides, variously embellished with lozenge and cell-diaper grounds, the interior and base lacquered black

Lot Essay

Similar boxes of this size and type have been published but this example stands out amongst the group for the depth and outstanding quality of the carving.
