Pocket-fitting flattened rectangular polished gold case with rounded corners, the hinged convex lid colourfully enamelled with a hunting scene, the concave base enamelled with scrolling monogram JY in blue and red on reeded guilloché, plain pushpiece, the inside with two red cloth straps

The firm of B. H. Joseph & Co. was founded by Barnet Henry Joseph and his brother Henry Joseph in June 1865 at Frederick Street, Birmingham. London showrooms were opened in 1878. 'By 1889, when the firm was said to be one of the largest jewellery houses in the trade, employing over 250 workmen specialising in diamond and gem work, all kinds of goldwork in 18, 15 and 9ct, silver ornaments for ladies' and gentlemen's wear, and silver requisites such as toilet services, vases, cups, childrens' rattles and thimbles, their London showrooms had moved to 29 Ely Place, EC, and they had opened a Spanish office at Preciados No. 35, Madrid' (J. Culme, The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths Jewellers & Allied Traders 1838-1914, Woodbridge, 1987, I, p. 266). The mark on the present case was in use from 16 March 1896. B. H. Joseph & Co. were amalgamated in 1929 with Payton, Pepper & Sons Ltd of Birmingham.
