A collection of Religious Texts, in Church Slavonic, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER
[Russia, early 19th-century]
150mm x 98mm. 200 leaves, 15 lines written in brown ink in various hands, rubrics and opening initials in red, with THIRTY-THREE FULL-PAGE MINIATURES (surface soiling to many leaves through use, a few repaired tears, opening leaves with marginal losses and restored to size). 20th-century mottled calf.
A provincial manuscript, characteristic of those made by the Old Believers, with naive, colourful illustrations accompanying the texts. It is likely that the present texts were originally part of a larger manuscript, and appear here bound out of order.

The texts include: the Book of the Lives of the Fathers, Chapter 18, St. Makarii (7 leaves, with accompanying miniature); Chapter 36, an unidentfied text (5 leaves, with three miniatures); Sermon Four, the Vision of the Monk Mesrop (75 leaves, with 26 miniatures); the Suffering of Saint Kharalampii (33 leaves); 8 October, St Taisii (7 leaves); 3 August, St Anthony of Novgorod (9 leaves); the Life of the Father Gerasim the Hermit (7 leaves); a Sermon by Saint John Chrysostom (16 leaves); 12 June, On the Birth of Saint Onufrii (15 leaves); 31 August - 1 July, Prayers (6 leaves); 30 April, 12 July and 23 August, Prayers (6 leaves); from the Book of Chosen Texts (6 leaves); Life of St Catherine (6 leaves); index (2 leaves).
