MAGIC SCROLL, in Ge'ez, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
[Ethiopia, 19th century]
738 x 110mm. One membrane (of 2, lacking lower half of scroll), one column of text written in black and red ink in a free traditional hand, with a Guardian Angel painted in brown, purple and black, and part of an apotropaic diagram (wear to upper edge of scroll).
An amulet scroll carrying magic formulas and prayers for protection against malevolent spirits and ill health. Although incomplete, it nevertheless bears an attractive example of the usual image of a Guardian Angel, measuring 235mm in height. The upper part of a grid-like diagram is visible at the foot of the scroll, representing the Seal of Solomon.
