BUCHANAN THE BACHELOR PRESIDENT. A waist-length image of a youthful, robust Buchanan, the sole bachelor President. It was certainly posed before the challenges of the highest office--for which he was manifestly poorly equipped--proved intractable, decisively souring his term in office. Another copy of this image, signed and dated 1865, was part of the first Shochet collection (sale, Christie's, 20 May 1994, lot 9, $7000), and another, dated 1865, was in the Jacobs collection (sale, Sotheby's, 29 October 1996, lot 91, $5,000). Buchanan signed cartes are nevertheless quite rare.
