The youth of Christ in his representation as Emmanuel does not refer to his childhood, but instead to the incorruptible, timeless youthfulness embodied in his incarnation, as suggested by prophet Isaiah, 7:14. Christ Emmanuel is usually portrayed in a Deisis or in a medallion in the subject of the 'Convocation of the Angels' (see for example lot 26). His depiction on this early panel alone is quite unusual.
