Lot Essay

Such triptychs were tratitionally produced in the Balkans and mainly in Bulgaria. They were used either for private devotion or as donations in gratitute for intercession to monasteries. The represented subjects reflected the patron's choices. A directly comparable example belongs to the collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and has recently been published by Dr. Yuri Piatnitsky in the catalogue of the exhibition 'Athos. Monastic Life on the Holy Mountain' (Helsinki, 2007), cat.no.1.70
