Lot Essay

A number of similar triptychs from the collection of the State Hermitage Museum were exhibited in the recent show of Mount Athos in Helsinki. Dr. Yuri Piatnitsky explained that such triptychs were produced in large numbers in the Slavic countries, mainly Bulgaria, and were used either for private devotion or were donated to churches as retributions for intercessions. For a further discussion, see the catalogue Athos. Monastic Life on the Holy Mountain (Helsinki, 2006), pp.237, 238, 258
