Stitched as issued, uncut and unopened. FIRST EDITION, suitably dedicated to the Duke of Chandos - one of the richest men of his age who then lost everything in the South Sea Bubble. MOUNTAINE, William. The Seaman's Vade-Mecum and Defensive War by Sea: Containing the Proportions of Rigging, Masts and Yards, Weight of Anchors, Sizes and Weights of Cables and Cordage, Lift of the Navy. The Exercise of the Small Arms, Bayonets, Granadoes and Great-Guns, Duty of Officers, &c. London, Mount and Page, 1747. 12°. 3 folding plates (somewhat creased, one in facsimile, some light soiling and browning, contents page with small tear, fore-edge of about 50 pages with ink spot, just entering blank margin). Contemporary calf gilt (upper joints cracked, rubbed). Second edition, first published in 1744, with new material added. A chapter on marine architecture that had appeared in the 1744 edition had been superseded by a recently published book, and was consequently omitted from the second edition. In its place appears a forty-two page essay on naval book-keeping, giving guidance to the ship's 'purser' and providing abstracts of accounts ledgers: it was, in the author's opinion, the first of its kind ever to be published.
