Castello Reale di Sarre in the Valle d'Aosta is located on a promontory which dominates the plain of Aosta. The castle which incorporates a central square tower was built in 1710 by Giovanni Francesco Ferrod on the ruins of a fortress dating from 1242. The castle was purchased by Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Italy, (1820-1878) in 1869 as a private estate used by his family to hold large hunting parties. The castle was further enhanced by Umberto I, King of Italy, (1844-1900) with the addition of a horn trophy room. A favourite retreat of Umberto II, King of Italy, (1904-1983) and his wife Maria-José, Queen of Italy, (1906-2001) until their exile in 1946, it was sold in 1972 and opened as a museum to the history of the Savoia family in the Valle d'Aosta.
