A LONGQUAN CELADON 'TWIN-FISH' DISH
CHINA, MING DYNASTY, EARLY 15TH CENTURY

Lot Essay

Paired fish symbolize fertility and connubial bliss, and they are also one of the Eight Buddhist symbols.
Dishes of this type, known as 'twin-fish' dishes, were popular products of the Longquan kilns during the late Southern Song to early Ming period.
Compare the current dish with another one, although decorated with four fishes, illustrated in M. Medley, Oriental Ceramics, vol.6, The Percival David Foundation od Chinese Art, London, Kodansha International Ltd., 1982, p.174, pl.356.
