Lot Essay

The present sideboard is strongly related to the trumeau made by Horrix for the Chinese room in Huis ten Bosch. The furnishings and panelling of the Chinese room were installed in 1790-1791. The furniture delivered for this room consisted of two fire-screens, two corner tables, a console, a trumeau and a clock case. The trumeau is illustrated in R.J. There is a clear shared characteristic of the strong canted tapering angles headed by a caryatid and terminating in feet on a square plinth.
