ALAIN-FOURNIER, Henri (1886-1914). Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent [Marie Scheikevitch], n.p., n.d. ('Mardi'), [1913-1914], one page, 8vo, blank
A grateful letter for her introduction to Monsieur Hébrard and referring to his next work:'Il m'a proposé pour le Temps ce qu'il était le plus logique de me proposer: lui apporter mon prochain roman ... Ce second roman est, pour l'instant un peu retardé par une nouvelle oeuvre qui s'est mise au travers de ma route ... Mais j'espère bien avant la fin de l'année avoir terminé Colombe Blanchet'.
Henri Alain-Fournier was born Henri Alban Fournier. Le Grand Meaulnes, the semi-autobiographical novel which secured his place in French literary history was inspired by his sudden falling in love with a girl who was already engaged, and was first serialised in the Nouvelle Revue Française in July - October 1913, shortly after his second and last meeting with Yvonne de Quiéricourt, the object of his devotion. It was issued in book form before the end of the year. His second novel, Colombe Blanchet, was unfinished at the time of his death in 1914, in the first months of the First World War. The Russian-born Marie Scheikevitch (1882-1966) moved in artistic and literary circles and was a close friend of Marcel Proust. Like Alain-Fournier, her lover Adrien Hébrard (director of Le Temps at the time of the present letter), was killed in the war. Her correspondence is in the Beinecke Library at Yale University.
