AUDEN, Wystan H. (1907-1973). Autograph letter signed ('W.H. Auden'), to Mr Taylor, Kirchstetten, Austria, 20 July n.y., one page, 4to.
'WE HAVE ALWAYS TO BE ON OUR GUARD AGAINST ALLOWING RHYMES TO DICTATE WHAT WE SAY'. Auden congratulates his correspondent on 'starting to write verse so late in life' and thanks him for a poem, responding with some comments: 'A great problem for someone writing verse in English -- it doesn't exist in German or Italian -- is that our language has relatively few rhymes. Consequently, we have always to be on our guard against allowing rhymes to dictate what we say. eg. I think that, had you not wrote the rhyme, you would naturally have wrote For man had set foot on the moon'.
The letter dates from sometime after 1957, when Auden purchased his summer home in Kirchstetten.
