LENAU, Nikolaus [i.e. Nikolaus Niembsch, Edler von Strehlenau (1802-1850)]. Autograph letter signed ('vNiembsch') to an unidentified friend, Vienna, 5 October 1838, one page, 4to (one patch of discolouration).

A LETTER OF CONDOLENCEThe hole torn by the death of a loved one can not be filled by words and thoughts: 'Die Lücke, die durch den Tod eines geliebten Menschen in das Leben der Seinigen gerissen wird, läßt sich nicht mit Worten und Gedanken ausfüllen ... Wie Ihnen auch alle übrige Freude des Lebens gedeihen mag, verehrter Freund, durch diese Lücke wird es immer rauh und kalt auf Sie hereinwehen; bis Sie selbst im Tode erkalten'.

After his abortive attempt to set up a homestead in Ohio in 1832-3, Lenau returned to Germany, and produced a series of poetic publications in the late 1830s, including the Neuere Gedichte of 1838, which gave full expression to his melancholic temperament.
