KLEE, Paul (1879-1940). Autograph letter signed ('Klee') to Wilhelm Hausenstein, Posenhofen, 6 June 1920, six pages, 8vo, on bifolia (a few markings in red pencil), with a carbon copy of Hausenstein's letter to Klee of 1June.
THE ARTIST'S STOCK RISING: answering a complaint that he has permitted a rival volume to appear simultaneously with Hausenstein's Kairuan oder die Geschichte vom Maler Klee (Kurt Wolff, 1921), Klee protests his unworldliness, which he describes as 'mehr eine die künstlerische Productions möglichkeit fördende Disciplin, als reine thorheit' [more a discipline to promote the possibility of artistic production than pure foolishness], and explains the situation: that his work is suddenly becoming popular, 'und ... mit dem steigenden Markt eine gewisse Speculation einsetzt', and he in fact has played no active role in promoting other books. Klee explains in some detail the manoeuvres surrounding various planned books, exclaiming that the only thing missing is for him to write an autobiography, 'Aber Gott sei Dank ist meine Feder faul'. He concludes with an expression of his high expectations from Hausenstein's work -- 'Darf ich nochmals betonen, dass ich mir von Ihrem Buch etwas Grundverschiedenes erwarte, nämlich ein Werk mit eigen künstelrischen Qualitäten, oder ganz einfach eine Dichtung ...' -- and expresses surprise at the large number of illustrations Hausenstein proposes.
