PROKOFIEV, Sergei (1891-1953). Autograph letter signed ('SPRKFV'), to Valter Federovich [Nuvel], on Pennsylvania Railroad 'En Route' stationery, 9 February 1930, 3½ pages, 4to.
On writing a new ballet. Prokofiev informs Nuvel that he will not be able to produce a new work by December, as he is writing compositions for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Library of Congress. He makes the suggestion that his former ballet, Chout (1915) could instead be produced by Serge Lifar, or perhaps the Scythian Suite or Schubert's Waltzes. Prokofiev offers to orchestrate his Suite for two pianos, which he had previously adapted from Schubert Waltzes, and which had been staged as a ballet at the Théatre du Champs-Elysées by Romanov. Prokofiev had injured his hands in a car accident the previous year, and in 1930 was making a new attempt at touring in America, where he was warmly received.
