A graceful letter of thanks referring to a gift from the Grand Duke:

Written five months after her marriage to General Bonaparte whom she followed to Italy in July. She remained there for eighteen months, staying in Milan, (where she was splendidly housed in the Palazzo Serbelloni), Florence, Genoa, Bologna, Mantua and Venice. The Grand Duke of Tuscany ('Son Altesse') was Ferdinand III, Duke of Lorraine, the brother of the German Emperor Francis II. The ruler of Tuscany from 1790-1799, he presented Josephine with a jewelled casket during her visit. For some time after her marriage to Napoleon, Josephine (born Marie-Joséphine Rose Tascher de la Pagerie) signed letters as 'Lapagerie Bonaparte'.
