The interesting letter to a favourite grandchild despairs at the political situation ('la stupide indifference des uns et la turbulence egarée des autres ... l'intrigue et la peur, les deux degoutantes sauvegardes du gouvernement') and the false republicanism of the day, describing incidents in the Chamber of Deputies and local matters, and giving news of other members of his family, and friends.
The letter to Masclet shows concern for the latter's health, hoping that he will be well enough to visit La Grange as he is unlikely to be in Paris before the next session except for a dinner, and La Fayette's autograph note certifies in favour of [one of the July revolutionaries whose name has been blocked out] that he saw him at the Hôtel de Ville on July 29, sent him to St-Cloud with his companions and received several reports from him before alternative arrangements in that place permitted his return to Paris. Madame de La Fayette writes to a friend who is visiting Paris, and their daughter to an unidentified lady that her father is absent in Melun but she hopes that she will still call.

The liberal journalist Joseph Masclet (1760-1833), known to La Fayette as 'Eleuthere', had been one of the leaders of the campaign to secure his release from detention at Olmütz where he was held by the Austrians after his expulsion from the National Assembly in 1792. Natalie, daughter of La Fayette's son, George Washington Lafayette, married Adolphe Perier (1802-1862); La Fayette was particularly fond of her. Anastasie de La Fayette (1777-1862) was married to Count Charles de Latour-Maubourg. (4)
