'GARIB[ALDI] MI HA DATO, PRIMA DI LASCIARE ROME, UNO DEI PIù FORTE DOLORE DELLA MIA VITA'; Mazzini's distress over a quarrel with Garibaldi. Following the declaration of the Roman Republic on 9 February, Mazzini was appointed 'Triumvir' on 29 March, effectively heading the government. Writing just after Garibaldi had left Rome to lead an expedition against the Neapolitans, his anger against him is apparent, 'used as I am to injustice, I did not expect if from him'. Mazzini also writes to Daverio (probably Francesco, Garibaldi's chief of staff, who was killed in Rome on 3 June by French troops) on the usefulness of the Neapolitan exiles he is gathering together and sending the following day, on passwords ('agli altri sia parole, non il segreto; e a ogni modo, vegliaichli'), on Goffredo (presumably Mameli (1827-1849), the poet and patriot who sent the famous despatch to Mazzini, 'Roma! Repubblica! Venite!').
