FRÖBEL, Friedrich (1782-1852, educationalist). Autograph letter signed ('F.W.A. Fröbel') to an unidentified recipient [the mineralogist and engraver Theodor Thon], Keilhau, 1 December 1825, 4 pages, 4to, bifolium (slight browning).
Responding to doubts about the reputation of one of his teachers: Thon has a son at Fröbel's school in Keilhau, and the reputation of the institution must therefore be as precious to him as to Fröbel himself. Fröbel therefore begs him for further details of his allegations, remembering that he had specifically brought up the teacher's name on the occasion of their first meeting, 'ich that dieß nicht ohne Absicht, doch Ihre Äußerung war so daß sie sich mehr auf dessen wissenschaftlichen als dessen moralischen Werth [bezog]'; if he had had any doubts about the teacher's qualities, he would never have taken him on.
It was after he had moved on to Bad Blankenburg (Thuringia) and founded a school there that, in 1840, Fröbel invented the term 'kindergarten' for his style of learning through play.
