GAUSS, Carl Friedrich (1777-1855). Autograph letter signed ('C.F. Gauss') to an unidentified recipient [a publisher], Göttingen, 10 March 1809, 1½ pages, 12mo, bifolium.

Proof corrections for his paper 'Theoria motus corporum in sectionibus conicis solem ambientium' (1809), which described a new method of measuring the course of the planets: he asks for particular attention to the manuscript corrections to two tables for the work; he proposes also some corrections to the foreword, 'Etwa in der Mitte der vorrede, in einem Absatze, der mit Incideram anfängt, steht irgendwo "peritare sinimus", wofür ich "interire sinimus" zu setzen bitte', and suggests other minor emendations.

One of the great polymaths, Gauss contributed significantly to the fields of number theory, analysis, differential geometry, geodesy, magnetism, astronomy and optics. His perfectionism however, as demonstrated in the present letter, limited the number of his publications.
