MENDELEEV, Dmitri Ivanovich (1834-1907, creator of the periodic table). Autograph letter signed, in Russian, to Anna Mikhailovna [Yevreinova], Bablovo, 10 July 1888, 3 pages, 8vo (light creasing).

Writing to the editor of the 'Northern Chronicle' ('Servenyi Vestnik'), Mendeleev is anxious to control the publication of an essay, which has overrun in length; he will not allow it to be split across two issues ('this is the overture and in it are all the main themes of the opera'), so suggests either printing it in full but accepting payment for only 1½ pages, or providing a proof with marked passages which may be omitted if restrictions of space dictate. Two further essays await publication.
