NEWTON, Sir Isaac (1643-1727). Two autograph manuscripts, n.d., calculations of coinage ('Guineas coind ... Decem ... Jan ... Nov ... Nov'), the calculations chiefly the addition of large sums, on both sides of two fragments of paper, approx 148 x 92mm (one heavily browned, with small loss to lower margin).
Newton was appointed Warden of the Royal Mint in 1696, and Master in 1699. Although these posts were intended as sinecures, Newton applied himself to them with great intensity, prosecuting counterfeiters, fixing the value of the guinea, and effectively moving the currency to the gold standard. (2)
