NEWTON, Sir Isaac (1643-1727). Autograph manuscript, n.d., in Latin, NOTES OF APOCALYPTIC PROPHESIES, each with a reference number ('1.21', '4.12', etc.), on the blank verso an address leaf directed to Newton ('For my Honord Friend/Mr Isaac Newton/Fellow of Trin: Coll: in/Cambridge'), one page, oblong 4to, remnant of seal (seal tear and stain).
Newton's notes trace a series of individual apocalyptic events ('The comet ... heralding Christ' ... 'The last destruction of idols' ... 'The return of the 12 tribes of the Jews', the destruction of the Roman empire, the rise and fall of Egypt) to two concluding paragraphs: the first describing the King's war against Macedonia, with the eventual loss of his whole kingdom, then 'black night, tempests, fire, blood, water, lightning, fire raining down from heaven and caedibus in caligine [cutting through the mist?], and afterwards there will be no more war', leading to the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, and their resurgence with the arrival of Christ. The second paragraph describes the deportation of captive Italy into Asia, 'And Rome will then be destroyed to its foundations'.
