PLANCK, Max (1858-1947). Autograph letter signed ('M. Planck') to an unidentified colleague [the mathematician Ernst Neumann], Berlin-Grunewald, 6 June 1922, 2 pages, 8vo, bifolium (slight stain to right margin).
A letter of thanks to Neumann for sending his introductory lectures on the theory of relativity (Vorlesungen zur Einführung in die Relativitätstheorie), a work which fulfills a growing need for both physicists and mathematicians, 'Die ersten verlangen hauptsächlich zu wissen, warum es überhaupt notwendig wurde, die klassische Mechanik zu erweitern, und die letzteren wollen eine enge Anknüpfung an die Sätze der Analysis und der Geometrie'.
It was largely thanks to Planck's influence that the revolutionary importance of Einstein's special theory of relativity was immediately recognised.
